"Clean vs Dirty" Though it is treated as a single thing, a summons at its absolute most basic, regardless of who/what/push/pull/etc, is actually several separate components. A "complete" basic summons is composed of: 1. Runes to open a "passage" 2. Runes to control "where" it opens. A. Which plane B. Which realm within the plane For purposes of examples I'll consider 1/2A/2B to be "complete." Provided you write all the parts, and for game purposes I assume you do unless you are to state otherwise, you'll always write it "cleanly" since you understand more or less what it needs to be/look like. (barring some horrible failure.)
Examples: 1 - Just opens "a passage." Most more than likely this would open a generic passage to anything within the earthly plane. (Includes greylands, and anything else.) -Dirty 1/2A - Opens a passage to anything within the stated plane. -Dirty 1/2B - Opens a passage to anything within any of realms. (This would be like opening a free doorway to anything like the Greylands on any Plane.) -Dirty 1/2A/2B - Opens correctly -Clean
This was part of the problem with Melindas group. They were opening just general passageways.
Ankroptic Summoners Generally speaking Ankroptic summoning priests know the summon Ankroptic spell as a single thing. If we were to say the spell is a number it might be 12,345. The Ankroptic summoner knows this as twelve thousand three hundred forty five. When in actuality it is more like: 12=Open passage, 3=plane, 4=hell realm, 5=Ankroptic.
Dewy is seems to have figured out things were in components and to remove the Ankroptic part and replace it with something else. But he would have seemed to at least initially have been making broad guesses about what he could put in in its place. As he started to produce results he'd "methodically" change out a rune or two modifying the characteristics. Through a lot of trial and error and a few other examples, he started working things out.
