When John and Lucien ended up in the Box...
The mountain scene visible through the window turned out to just be a picture which could be torn away and revealed this "alter." It had several shelves for placing objects on and a large center "iris" which would open and close depending on the objects placed on it.
If I compare this to the mural, does it look similar enough to be a room with a knife in it?
